Wolf Larsen is the most noted character in Jack London’s fiction, through whom London investigates the philosophical proposition whether morality is indispensable.London tries to show the necessity of morality in and outside The SeaWolf and ends up in his adoration of moral nihilism.London seems to express his criticism of capitalist moralism by showing Larsen’s degeneration and failure both as a person and a captain, while he cannot contain his unconscious identification with and praise for Larsen, which is an embodiment of the moral puzzlement of both London and capitalist commercialism.
