Analyze“Algorithm Awareness”——The Proposal of a Cognitive Framework Based on Users’Perspective

“算法意识”在算法研究中日渐被更多地提及,但其始终缺乏一个明确的所指,与此同时还存在与“算法知识”概念的混用与纠缠,本研究旨在从用户的算法实践与意识中锚定一个认知框架。本文选取14名与算法交互最深刻的特定年龄与职业的受访者进行半结构式访谈,采用主题分析的方法对数据进行编码。研究发现,用户的意识呈现出算法存在与第三人效应、算法过滤及其逻辑、算法合作、算法自我呈现与自我规制、算法祛魅与算法批判以及算法社会的建构与省思六个纬度的框架,尝试为算法研究厘清概念并提供一个心理认识的图示。

The term“algorithm awareness”is increasingly mentioned in algorithm research,but it lacks a clear reference and is confused with the concept of“algorithm knowledge”.This study aims to anchor a cognitive framework from users’algorithmic practices and awareness.Fourteen respondents of specific ages and occupations who had the most profound interactions with algorithms were selected for semi-structured interviews,and the data were coded using thematic analysis.It is found that users’consciousness presents a framework of six latitudes:algorithmic presence and third-person effect,algorithmic filtering and its logic,algorithmic collusion,algorithmic self-presentation and self-regulation,algorithmic demystification and algorithmic critique,and algorithmic social construction and introspection,in an attempt to clarify the concept and provide a mental cognitive map for algorithmic research.
