摘要
艾略特和庞德发动的现代派诗歌运动提倡创新,首要的便是形式的创新,自由诗因此一跃成为现代派诗歌最鲜明的标志。然而,现代派诗歌与自由诗的关系极为复杂,充满了矛盾和争议。不过,在以现代派话语为主导的学院派文学史书写中,当代学者们为了捍卫现代派诗歌经典,不仅无视两者之间的矛盾和争议,还武断地将自由诗作为武器继续攻击20、30年代深受美国大众读者喜爱的非现代派诗人群体,这不免让人对文学史书写的客观性产生质疑。自由诗是现代派诗歌历史书写中浓墨重彩的一笔,围绕现代派诗歌与自由诗产生的各种矛盾和争议必然促使读者以批判的眼光重新审视文学史书写的客观性,进而对现代派诗歌经典进行历史和诗学反思。
Formal innovation was central to the Modernist Movement initiated by Eliot and Pound and thus free verse came to the fore.However,contradictions and controversies surrounding Modernist poetry and free verse have since persisted in poetic criticism during and after the Modernist period.Most contemporary American academics have consciously ignored the contradictions and controversies in an effort to continually attack non-Modernist poets and to defend the Modernist canon.Free verse played a significant role in the making of the Modernist canon;controversies and contradictions mentioned above inevitably urge the reader to reflect on the Modernist canon and poetics.
