The religious rock carvings of Southern Sichuan potentially provide a key insight into Buddhist practice at a local level in the Tang and Song Dynasties. The lack of historical documentation for these sites and the relative lack of inscriptions, their poor state of preservation, and the extent to which they are dispersed and hidden throughout the landscape This paper shows how geospatial and archaeological methods can be used alongside art historical methods to allow us to interpret these sites containing less well preserved statues and include them in understanding the variety of roles these sites played in both the lay and religious communities of the time. This paper focuses on the location of religious rock carvings within the physical landscape. This paper shows preliminary results which demonstrate the importance of visibility, viewshed and complexity in conjunction with the niche subjects found within a site in understanding the site function.
