多模态视角下儿童绘本英汉翻译补偿研究——以苏斯博士双语经典系列儿童绘本为例

A Study of Compensation in the Chinese Translation of Children’s Picture Books from the Perspective of Multi-modality:A Case Study of Dr.Seuss’s Bilingual Series

摘要 作为多模态文本,儿童绘本之所以充满意趣,离不开语言模态和图像模态的相互配合,而在绘本的译作中,译者不得不采取一定的补偿策略来弥补由于语言文化差异造成的多模态文体风格在翻译中的损失,以此传递原作的图文意义。本文基于韩礼德的系统功能语法和Painter等人的新视觉语法,以苏斯博士双语经典系列儿童绘本为语料,对儿童绘本英汉翻译补偿进行多模态视角下的探究。研究表明,在语言和图像双模态中,译者可以从概念意义、人际意义和语篇意义出发,运用隐性和显性的翻译补偿手段,特别是隐性补偿,来还原源语的语言效果并弥补源语中未能交代的图像信息,以充分满足儿童读者的需求,实现等效的儿童绘本翻译。 Children’s picture books are fascinating as multimodal texts due to the cooperation between language and image.Considering linguistic and cultural differences,translators have to adopt compensation strategies to compensate for the loss of multimodal style in translation and convey the meaning of the original picture books.This paper explores the translation compensation strategies of children’s picture books from a multimodal perspective based on Halliday’s Systematic Functional Grammar and New Visual Grammar of Painter et al.,with the corpus selected from the classic children’s picture books series of Dr.Seuss.The paper indicates that translators can begin with the ideational meaning,interpersonal meaning,and textual meaning,using implicit and explicit translation compensation means,especially the implicit one,to represent the language effect of the source language,to make up for the missing image information in the source language and meet the needs of the children audience,to achieve the pragmatic equivalence of the target text and the source text.
