In the historical canon of Chinese modern literature, Eileen Chang’ s novels are regarded as only concerned about personal life but indifferent to her time. In fact, some social issues are indirectly but profoundly addressed by Chang’ s writings, as represented by her novel Love in a Fallen City wherein the heroine Bai Liusu’s three'absences' and 'returns' suggest her difficult awakening of female consciousness. Bai’s acts have reflected the psychological struggle of ordinary women of the early twentieth century between existence and awakening, and thus indirectly allegorized the limitations in width and depth of the success of the May 4th Movement.
