20世纪西方的中国形象,在可爱与可憎、可敬与可怕两极间摇摆,从"黄祸论"开始,到"中国威胁论"结束。在西方的想象中有两个中国,一个是乐园般光明的中国,另一个是地狱般黑暗的中国,同一个中国,在西方文化中却表现为两种完全不同的形象,而这两种形象在不同历史时期重复或者稍加变化地出现在各类文本中,几乎成为一种原型。在西方文化中,中国的真实含义不是地理上一个确定的现实的国家,而是文化想象中某一个具有特定政治伦理意义的"他者的空间",具有意识形态与乌托邦的双重特征。
The image of China in the 20th-century West undulates between being desirable and detestable, and respectable and formidable, starting with the discourse of the 'Yellow Peril' and ending with that of 'China Threats.' In the Western imagination, there are two dominating images of China, one being paradise-like while the other, hell-like. In all genres, China is continuously constructed in Western culture in these two images, which are slightly changed to align with particular historical periods. These two images have nearly become archetypes. In Western culture, China is never a real country with geographical certainty; rather, it is an Other's space with particular political ethics. Such a construction bears a double feature of prevailing ideology and Utopian dream.
