Abstract The author points out that though it is difficult to define the connotation of the conceptculture,there are two distinguishable basic usages in Western circles of social sciences,namely used as a general word and as an anslytic category.This article mainly makes an inquiry into the connotation ofcultureas an analytic category used in Western anthropology and sociology.The article also examines the usage of the conceptculturein Chinese traditional cultrue.It argues that the conceptculturein modern sense in China is the product of sinolization of the Western concept,and looks into this course of sinicization.In the vogue of cultural studies rising in the 1980s,the connotation of culturewas reexamined and the conceptculturein the sense of anthropology was again introduced and used by many writers.
