Abstract The article holds that the unified planning of the regional tourism around Taihu Lake is the reasonable choice in developing the regional tourism by Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai and Anhui in East China for the following reasons:1 The tourist resources in the areas around Taihu Lake have the nature of mutual support and additional advantages; 2 The market orietation has different levels to meet different and variegated requirements of tourists so as to raise the economic efficiency as a whole; 3 There exists a balance between in bound and out bound tourists in those areas; 4 Tourism propaganda and its integrated promotionneed to be systemized. And hence the author makes the following suggestions to develop the tourism ring around Taihu Lake as a tourism region; 1 Bringing intofull play the combined advantages of the tourist resources in the region by dividing the tasks and developing the strong points and avoiding the weak ones so as to produce a variety of tourist products with mutually supporting effects; 2 Carrying out a unified planning of the tourist itineraries with special features of the region as a whole to form a market superiority with strong competitiveness; 3 Carrying out combined promotion and general propaganda with a distinctivetourism image of the reigon to create a high quality trade mark of the tourismring.
