Since the 1990s, cognitive science and cognitive linguistics have aroused increasing interest, leading to the birth of cognitive narratology and cognitive stylistics, among other interdisciplinary approaches. As a prominent branch of 'postclassical narratology' or 'contextualist narratology,' cognitive narratology has been making significant contributions to narrative studies and to the 'narratological renaissance' in the West. The present paper offers a discussion of the essential characteristics and different models of cognitive narratology, aimed at answering the following questions: What kind of 'context' and 'reader' cognitive narratology is typically concerned with? Upon what ground is cognitive narratological research usually based? What are the characteristics of different models in this field? What is the relation between classical narratology and cognitive narratology?
