The Exploratory Study of the Fiction of the Tang Dynasty

唐代人从没有用“传奇”一词来指他们的小说创作，更多是以“传记”或“杂传记”来称呼，他们的“小说”观念虽然与前代相比有所变化，但仍很庞杂，与现代小说概念相去甚远，唐人的那种有意识进行故事的虚构，也只能看成是写诗的本能延伸，因此，唐代，从整体来看，还不能算是“有意为小说”的时代，更不能算是中国小说的真正开始。

People of the Tang Dynasty never referred to their novel—writing as“legend”.Instead,more often theycalled it as“biography”or“minxed—biography”.Compared with that of the preyious dynasty,their viewpoints of the“fiction”changed,but were numerous and jumbled,and they were greatly different from the concept of modern fiction.The way that people of the Tang Dynasty made up their fiction intentionally can only be considered as the instinctive exten-sion of composing of poetry.Therefore,on the whole,the Tang Dynasty cannot be regarded as the times of“intentionalnovel—writing,let alone to say the beginning of Chinses fiction.
