It is usually said that there were two internal factors leading to the breakup of the Institute of Chinese Studies of Amoy University in 1927. These were the quarrels between Lu Xun and the so called “Modern Review School”, and the conflicts between members of the Institute of Chinese Studies of Amoy University and Lin Wenqing, the university president, as well as some members of the Faculty of Science. Although it is true that conflicts did exist among various members of the University, it would be a mistake to simply accept Lu Xun's side of the story that these were clear cut political hostilities between various factions. This paper suggests that one should perhaps look at the breakup of the Institute from a wider political and social context, rather than regarding the incident as mere personal conflicts in a narrow sense. It argues that this incident was an indication of the division and re integration of academic and political forces of the time. While social conflicts became more and more intensified, the political fractions established since the May Fourth Movement became more and more fragmented. Under such circumstances, scholars were left with no alternative but could only go to extremes in both political and academic terms.
