This article explores the role of the lexical approach in English language teaching and learning. The lexical approach, based on the idea that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and produce lexical phrases as unanalyzed wholes, or “chunks”, concentrates on developing learners' proficiency with words and word combinations. The article also provides the pedagogical implications for facilitating English learners' linguistic competence.
