Four Functions of the Toned Words at the End of Sentences

对语气和口气应作这样的区分:语气只有陈述、疑问、祈使、感叹四种,口气是指句子中思想感情色彩的种种表达法,如肯定、否定、强调、委婉、活泼、迟疑等;一般认为句末语气词是表达语气的,如果把语气和口气区分开来,就会发现句末语气词并不表达语气,只表达口气;句末语气词在表达口气时,具有增添口气、消减口气、指明疑问点、暗示预设等四种语用功能。

The category of the toned words and tone is like this: toned words are on the statement, interrogation, imperative sentence, and exclamation; while tone is about the emotion of the statement, such as positive, negative, stress, euphemism, active and so on. The functions of the toned words at the end of sentences are to add or decrease tone, to point out questioning points and to preset the implication.
