Two defects can be found in Christoph Lindner’s analysis of Vanity Fair. First, he has failed to read into the relationship between the narrative of “progress” and the commodity culture. Second, he focuses his research on Joseph Sedley to such an extent that Rebecca is hardly mentioned in his analysis of the symptoms of the reified characters in the novel. Rebecca is, after all, the protagonist in the story. The commodity culture refracted from her is, therefore, worthy of the reader’s attention.
