In this paper, the characteristics of electrochemical capacitors were described in details. Compared to rechargeable batteries, electrochemical capacitors have capability of high rate charge/ discharge and much longer cycle life, The heat effects in the process of charge/discharge cycle of supercapacitors are less than that of the reclargeable batteries. The various electrochemical capacitors, which included the electric double layer capacitor, adsorption pseudocapacitors, asymmetric electrochemical capacitors, conducting polymer redox supercapacitors and hybrid electrochemical capacitors, were discussed, The different applications of supercapacitors were also described.
