To most of the readers in China, their understanding of The Lord of the Rings starts from the three movies made by Hollywood. In fact, when Tolkien wrote this tremendous work, he returned to the tradition of British literature, namely the myth form. The story happened in a fictitious middle - earth, in which goodness and evil confronted with each other. However, Tolkien's myth is not the same as the traditional one; it surpasses the form both from the structure and the inner connotation. This article explores the novel' s modern meanings beyond the traditional myth and the revelation it brings to the modern society.
