While the past ten years see a big resurgence of Gothic criticism, there appears a tendency to enlarge the denotation of the "Gothic novel", a tendency which turns it from a restricted historical word into a generalized cultural mode of horror. But from the textual structure of the "Gothic novel", the "horror" is not the only factor that decides the genre, and this "horror" is, essentially, different from that "horror" of later related novels such as Ghost stories, horror fiction and horrible classic novels. Moreover, the "Gothic novel" differs from the latter in its social perception. Therefore. it cannot be regarded as a timeless mode but a closed literarv genre.
