On the Background of the Study of Mencius in the Qing Dynasty

清代《孟子》学的兴盛,成因是多方面的,既受当时政治、经济、学术、文化、科技等因素的影响,也离不开汉、唐、宋、明《孟子》学之基础,同时清代的经学思潮、科举和四书热也极具推动作用。

A series of factors contributed to the booming of the study of Mencius in the Qing Dynasty. The booming of the study of Mencius were influenced by factors like politics, economy, academics, culture, science and technology of that time, as well as the studies of Mencius during the Tang, Song and Ming dynasties. Moreover, the study of Confucian classics, the imperial examination system and the craze for Four Books in the Qing Dynasty gave impetus to the study of Mencius.
