Investigation and Discrimination of Military Officers Titled Guowei and Taiwei in the Qin and Han Dynasties

太尉是否为秦官一直存在争论,而邦尉一职也不见于文献记载,然而新公布的太尉与邦尉封泥却说明这两个职官在秦时的存在。太尉与邦尉的职掌应该都与军事密切相关,但没有确切的证据能够证明它们是国家的最高军事长官。太尉与邦尉在秦灭六国前都已经存在,因此二者应该是两种不同的职务,而不是一种职务的不同名称。

Whether Taiwei existed as a title of military officers in the Qin Dynasty remains in dispute. Bangwei as a title of military officers cannot be found in bibliography record as well. However, the scove of Taiwei and Bangwei recently announced shows the existence of the official ranks in the Qin Dynasty. The duties of Taiwei and Bangwei should be closely connected with military affairs,but there is not any solid evidence demonstrating they are the supreme military officers of the sate.Taiwei and Bangwei had already existed before the State Qin conquered the other six states. Therefore, the two should be two different ranks rather than different names of the same title.
