摘要
This paper challenges the popular point of view that the first interpretation of Marxist philosophy in China is historical materialism, which didn’t appear until the May Fourth Movement.Actually,at the very beginning of the 20th century,Marxist philosophy had already been introduced into China as kind of social evolutionism. This paper investigates the interpretation from the following three perspectives:Marx as a social evolutionist, the debate on the stages of social development and the conflicts between the theory of evolution and that of revolution. Finally, this paper draws the conclusion as follows:Social progressivism should be a more appropriate name for Marxist philosophy as far as the big difference between Marx’s "evolutionism" and Darwin’s evolutionism is concerned.
