In order to know the essence of mathematics in an all-round wayand to promote the development in the study and the education of mathematics, the arthor, in this paper, suggests that generally acknowledged three characteristics of mathematics - high abstraction, strictness insystem, and widerangging application -should be developed in to five with two additional characteristics - distinctive artistry and eternal mentalathletics.
