A Probe into Organizational Stucture of Department & County Yamen in the Qing Dynasty

州县是清代政权体制中的基层政权,是一切政事的开始。由于在地方政治中的重要地位,研究清代政治史的学者对其表现了浓厚兴趣,但对衙署内的书吏分多少房尚存争论。从《南部县档案》及其他原始文献的记载看,州县除了六房之外,还遍设承发房,其余之房因需而设。

As local governments within the political framework of the Qing Dynasty, department and county are where local political affairs are undertaken. Due to their important role in local polities, the scholars studying political history of the Qing Dynasty invariably exhibit their strong academic interests in them. However, there is a controversy over the sub-division of clerk office under Yamen. Judging from Nanbu County Archives and other relevant ancient documents, department and county Yamen set up reception and distribution offices, in addition to the traditionally instituted 6 offices. It is worth noting that there existed other additional offices established according to unique local conditions.
