Following the official announcement of the Chinese government that China's gold reserves have been increased to 1054 tons, China has become the country with the fifth largest gold reserves. However, Japan, which also has large scales of foreign exchange reserves like China, hasn't made a substantial increase in gold reserVes for many years. It raises a question about the necessity for China to increase its gold reserves. In this thesis, the author compared the cost and utility of reserving gold for China and Japan and analyzed the reason why China and Japan adopted two different policies of gold reserves. As a conclusion, Japan's gold-reserve policy is not suitable for China. China should hold more gold reserves than Japan and it is reasonable for China to raise its gold reserves.
