This study, following Swales’ CARS Model, aims to explore the generic structure of Chinese MA thesis introductions by examining 100 texts drawn from students in the School of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Beijing Normal University in the field of Applied Linguistics. The analysis shows that, Chinese MA students actively construct their role as a researcher either in terms of "establishing a territory" or in terms of "occupying the niche" by choosing an appropriate research topic, establishing a scientific position for analysis, and outlining a clear thesis structure; however, in terms of "establishing a niche", they lack challenging and forceful means of creating the research space, revealing that their learner status and cultural background are influencing factors of this specific genre. A modified model is provided for pedagogical purposes, based on evaluation of the generic structure of Chinese MA thesis introductions.
