In Jean Rhys' postcolonial novel Voyage in the Dark, Anna Morgan as a West Indian immigrant suffers from racial and cultural prejudice in the "Mother Country" and witnesses the darkness of the imperial center from an "Other's" point of view. On the other hand, though living as an outcast, Anna never gives up the resistance against colonial power. With West Indian culture as her root, she starts subversion from within the center, writes back to the "heart of darkness," and constructs a postcolonial counter-discourse.
