The working principle,classification,modeling process and technology features for rapid tooling（RT） based on rapid prototyping are discussed.The difference between RT with traditional mold making is also investigated.Several typical rapid tooling technologies are compared and summarized from the point of mold period,fabrication cost and production cycle.Some key problems which rapid tooling industry will meet are analyzed.The application prospect of the rapid tooling based on rapid prototyping is presented.
