The recluses in the Spring and Autumn Period have been connected with "gourds",which means "unprofitable" and "useless".The importance of the existence of a recluse makes a contrast to the lightness of a life. Those so-called good people who were serving in political positions liked to consider their virtues as jade;while the recluses who liked neither serving some masters nor making friends with their kings were hated by the governors, then got political persecutions. Therefore, the recluses had to pretend to be insane or live a secluded life in remote, forested mountains in order to protect themselves from being killed.
