The studies so far on the Chinese-Japanese language contact have ignored the fact that Japanese grammar has been influenced by the introduction of antithesis and parallelism, the two peculiar Chinese poetry and prose rhetoric. Through the study of novels by Souseki Natsume, the Japanese kundoku-style translations of Chinese poetry and proses, and some Japanese classics, it is argued that antithesis and parallelism have had the following influence on the use of infinitive verbs in the Japanese language in the course of language contact between China and Japan: the infinitive form is primarily used in antithetical and parallel structures in the Japanese kundoku-style translations of Chinese poetry and proses, in kanbun kundoku-style works, in waken konkr-bun style works, as well as in many of Souseki's novels written in the Meiji era. Such a close link of the form and linguistic contexts has enabled the grammatical form to adopt a unique syntactic-semantic structure.
