Japanese teaching in China's universities has entered into a new transitional stage after a decade of rapid development. The number of universities setting up Japanese major programs has increased sharply along with the number of students majoring in Japanese, teaching staff, and published research reports. Ivory tower-style education and applied education coexist. We need to re-consider and address the new problems emerging in the traditional stage so as to meet the needs of Japanese major students in the 21st century and to survive the furious competition in the employment market. It is imperative to shift focus from cultivation of language ability and communication skills to emphasizing cross-cultural communication skills, from Japanese learning orientation to linguistic expertise and skills orientation, from the cultivation of ability to adapt to Japanese related job requirements to emphasizing the ability to fit into any kind of job requirements. We Japanese language educators ought to review the goal of Japanese language teaching in the preliminary stage which aims to fully develop students' capability to take the initiative to study with the instructions from teachers. Also teachers should participate in scientific research in broader areas such as Japanese culture, Japanese society, etc. In a word, we are now faced with a strand of difficulties which need to be tackled immediately during the transitional stage of China's Japanese teaching, and we must embrace the challenges and seek out new opportunities.
