In the current teacher assessment system, teachers' performance is overly emphasized but teachers' professional spirituality is almost ignored. The authors suggest that teachers' professional spirituality is a critical aspect of excellent teachers. To deal with this problem in the system of teacher assessment, this paper tries to initiate the discussion on teach- ers' professional spirituality by firstly exploring the rich conception of it. Even though teachers' professional spirituality is often tacit, the authors try to explore the conception by setting up three levels of teachers' professional spirituality develop- ment: teachers' professional identity as the first level, teachers' virtue as the second level and teachers' mission as the third level. The paper suggests that the concept of teachers' professional spirituality can help understand the rich meaning of teachers' professional development.
