20世纪中发生了两次世界大战，使人类文明遭到了惨重的破坏，但世界各国人民在战后为重建家园，恢复生产而大兴土木的建设中，桥梁工程也取得了辉煌的成就。而中国桥梁在对世纪最后20年所取得的进步更令世界桥梁界惊叹不已。在这一成就的鼓舞下，一些发达国家开始构想在21世纪建设更加宏伟的跨海工程。中国在21世纪也有宏伟的交通建设规划，其中包括沿太平洋海岸公路上的跨海工程。可以预料：北欧、日本和中国将是21世纪上半叶世界桥梁工程建设的热点。中国的桥梁工作者要承认差距，不甘落后，坚持自主设计和建设的原则，为21世纪跨海工程中的技术难点做好准备，争取创造出更好的业绩，使中国成为世界桥梁强国的重要一员，重视中国古代桥梁的辉煌。

It can be expected that, Northern Europe, Japan and China will be the hot places in world's bridge engineering construction in the first half of 21st century.Chinese bridge engineers must admit the differences, but be unwiiling to lag behind , persist the principle of deciding for ourselves in design and construction , and make good preparation against the technical difficulties for the sea-crossing projects in 21st century , in order to strive for better achievement, which will make China an important member among world's powerful countries in bridge consttuction , and reappear the brilliance of Chinese ancient bridges.
