In order to design and plan environments that are supportive of people landscape architects and planners must understand how humans perceive and react to the environment, but human perception is complex. However, there is a strong evolutionary basis for human perception of the landscape that causes people to react similarly to different landscapes. This article describes how researchers can study patterns of landscape preference, a basic reaction to the landscape, to reveal underlying perceptions. This approach to studying perceptions is called the content identifying methodology and was developed by environmental psychologists, Stephen and Rachel Kaplan. The article describes the methodology and provides examples from previous studies of commercial environments.
