Rachel Carson was a nature writer with a trilogy of sea writings and Silent Spring, a book which is said to have changed the course of history. She was credited with having initiated the contemporary environmental movement. In her correspondence with Dorothy Freeman, her intimate friend, in twelve years, "a white hyacinth" is a metaphor of much significance. This paper focuses on Always, Rachel: The Letters of Rachel Carson and Dorothy Freeman, 1952 - 1964, and aims to find out the implications of the hyacinth meta- phor and its relation to the trajectory of Carson' s writings.
