This paper puts forward the concept of virtual patrons of the digital library and analyzes their characteristics in utilizing the information resources.It is indispensable for the digital library to manage the virtual patrons with authentication and authorization and to probe the laws of their access to and use of digital resources.To improve service to the virtual patrons,the current sophisticated user interfaces should be integrated and simplified,and Web\|based reference service,personalized service and training should be developed in the digital library development.
