A Survey of occupational hazards of VDT operators was made. It contained the microclimate of workshops (including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, atmospheric presure, illumination, noise, air ionization, ambient air CO2 content and bacteria counts ) , health examinations on 57 VDT operators and 49 references. The results showed that in the workshops there both higher noise intensity and cations in the air than the reference rooms. The illumination intensity of the rooms were all lower than the standard. The number of anions per unit volume air was lower in the VDT rooms than in the reference. There were more persons in the workshops complaining of discomfort than those in the reference. The operators had more subjective symptoms (headache, vertigo, bad memory, discomfort in the eyes, joint ache, tightness of chest, lack in strenhg) than the references. The 5-HT level in the platelet of the operators was also significantly higher than that of the reference. It was concluded that the main harmful effects came from the ion level change, thepersistent higher noise and the weak illumination,
