By surveying 594 new-generation employees, this research demonstrates that, for employees born in the 1980s and 1990s, their need for involvement positively relates to the preference for participative and coaching leadership styles, and negatively relates to the preference for directive and delegating leadership styles, which is moderated by perception of employee involvement and trust in leader. These findings suggest that companies should pay more attention to the compatibility between the leader and his/her followers and encourage a leader to adjust his/her style accordingly.
