On the Absence of Luxury Funerals and Long Time Mourning in the Pre-Qin Confucian Thoughts

厚葬久丧历来被认为由先秦儒家所提倡,也因此而备受诟病。但实际上先秦儒家并无厚葬久丧之说。自仲尼始,经子思、孟轲、荀卿,所宣扬的丧葬观念及礼制细节虽有所变化,但其唯仁、尚礼的精神却并无改变,即使在一些顺时而为、变通礼节的丧葬事件中,也绝无厚葬久丧的现象。

The concept of luxury funerals and long time mourning has long been considered to be advocated by the Pre-Qin Confucians, so it is widely criticized. But in fact the Pre-Qin Confucians didn＇t have this view. A few changes took place in the funeral concepts and ritual details from Confucius to Zisi, Mencius, and Xunzi, but the spirit of benevolence and courtesy remained unchanged. Even in some funeral cases that the rite had to be adjusted to the situation at that time, the phenomenon of luxury funerals and long time mourning never happened.
