From the perspective of Gates's rhetorical theory, this essay analyzes the rhetorical strategy of signifying in Zora Neale Hurston's autobiography Dust Tracks on the Road. The autobiography is a metaphorical text abounding in many signifying images, which are keys to the understanding of the text. The text embodies the element of Hurston's typical "speakerly text", i.e. the employment of direct speech and free indirect discourse, which implies the double voice of the text. To mediate between the dual readerships, by employing the rhetorical strategy of Signifying, the speaking subject tries to pursue and revise the text's voice. By representing the richness and diversity of black culture, the speaking subject reduces the dominant white culture to the margin so that the real voice of the racial self of black people can be fully uttered.
