The establishment of relationship by marriage was an important means taken by the central government of ancient China in order to strengthen their political and military relation with minority regimes in border areas. Based on analysis of eleven unearthed epitaphs of the Murong community, the royal family of the Tuyuhun ethnic group in the Tang period, the present paper corrects a wrong record in the 'Biography of the Tuyuhun' of the New History of the Tang 《新唐书·吐谷浑传》. It points out that the change of the attitude of courteous reception the Tang government adopted to the Tuyuhun royal family was a reflection of the political and military relationship between the Tang and either of the Tuyuhun and Tubo. This was embodied in the fact that, following the weakening of the Tuyuhun's function of antagonizing the Tubo in the northwestern border area of ancient China, the Tang government married imperial family women with lower status into the Tuyuhun royal family.
