Professor Xue Boshou′s road to a great TCM physician

文章根据薛伯寿教授讲话整理而成,薛伯寿教授殷切期望学生坚持走大医精诚、德艺双馨之路,强调要不断积累,全面提升人文素养,并重视古文化修养,在努力钻研业务的同时,淡泊名利,不断减少功利心,始终保持赤子之心,追求“圣人无常心,以百姓心为心”的境界,诊治疾病“安神定志,无欲无求”;提出欲成大医须研读《易经》《道德经》,须顺应天地之道,自强不息,厚德载物,要效法水善利万物而不争,天地长养万物而不求回报;要真正领悟治病容易治人难,应明白,人生天地之间,处于社会之中,生活在家庭之内,风土人情,物候物产各有不同,体质秉性差异不少,受到多种因素影响,不能单单只治病不见人;须善治外感热病,尤其传染病,应融会贯通“伤寒”“温病”“温疫”学说,对于中医各家学说,不要有门户之见。

This article is based on the speech of Professor Xue Boshou.He earnestly hoped that the students should stick to the path to be a great physician with absolute sincerity and the pursuing of both professional excellence and moral integrity.He emphasized the need for continuous accumulation and overall improvement of humanistic quality,especially traditional culture.One should keep assiduous effort,remain innocent and always be indifferent to fame and wealth.A great doctor should obey“The Sage has no heart of his own;He uses the heart of the people as his heart”.As for treating patients,“doctors should be calm and concentrated without any desire and avarice”.He proposed that a great physician should grasp the Book of Changes and the Tao Te Ching,to conform to the way of heaven and earth,be self-discipline with good virtue,just like water bringing all benefits to all kinds of things without getting payment,and Heaven and earth nurturing all things without expecting anything in return.One should also remember that solving the difficulties of people is harder than treating his or her disease because human-being is diverse from each other in terms of physical and mental condition,family condition,geographical condition and social condition,which should be taken into account in treating disease.One should be skilled in treating external-contraction febrile diseases,especially infectious diseases.A great physician should grasp the theory of“cold damage”,“febrile disease”and“epidemic disease”and have no prejudice against theories of other physicians.
