Mimesis points out that art originated from the human imitation of nature and reality. From ancient Greece to modern times, mimesis actually plays an important role in the western art.For the reason why it is at the center of the Western aesthetic tradition,we think that it is not only because of the central position of mimesis in various forms of artistic thought, but also for the reason that this theory involves the fundamental problems that are still urgent for contemporary aesthetics. In this paper, through the comparison of past and present,we try to study the evolution of mimesis from a historical perspective. And meanwhile,we will analyse mimesis and its reasonable kernel from the angles of literary theory, literary psychology, and aesthetics,in order to explore the significance of mimesis for human thinking and artistic creation and the spring of the vitality of mimesis. However, the dilemma of mimesis is also undeniable, and the rethinking of the theory is particularly urgent.
