Tippu Tip has traditionally been referred to as a notorious slave trader in the West, while seldom has been mentioned about his role in the historical and social transformation of East and Central Africa in the second half of the nineteenth century. In fact,Tippu Tip had multiple identities and the complex intricacies of the long-distance trade in which he engaged are greatly simplified. The European denunciation of the Arabs represented by Tippu Tip as engaged in the slave trade was motivated by the need for the overall hegemony of the European empire.Tippu Tip’s historical figure has largely been demonized and labeled with a single identity, and the analysis surrounding the creation of this historical figure can provide a glimpse into the intertwining of Western colonial discourse,Arab nationalism, and indigenous African dissonance.
