Demarcation,Transgression and Disorientation——A Spatial Reading of the Anti-growth Process of Clara in Jerusalem the Golden

《金色的耶路撒冷》通过对女主人公克拉拉生活的描写,展现了克拉拉在实现自我方面作出的努力。以往研究认为,克拉拉通过逃离诺瑟姆小镇的方式实现了自我,然而,借助空间权力理论分析,我们发现克拉拉实际上走向了反成长的道路。以诺瑟姆为代表的乡镇空间和以伦敦、巴黎为代表的城市空间均依托阶层和文化差异划分出权力边界,但不论在乡镇还是在城市,克拉拉都处于边缘化地位。克拉拉在感受到城乡空间的差异表征后开始作出反抗,并试图建立与权力空间对抗的个体自由空间,但克拉拉的反抗行为本质上是对空间权力的服从与依恋,这种反抗不仅未能让她实现自我,反而导致她逐渐走向反成长道路。通过描绘克拉拉追求自由的经历,小说展现了20世纪60年代英国城乡空间的权力特征,揭示出“金色的耶路撒冷”的虚幻性,并指出人们依附于权力进行的僭越与反抗是不可能实现自我的。

Through the description of the life of the heroine Clara,Jerusalem the Golden shows the efforts made by Clara to realize herself.Previous researches believed that Clara realized her self-fulfillment by escaping from the small town Northam.However,analyzing from the spatial power theory,we find that Clara has actually taken a path of anti-growth.Based on the differences of social class and culture,the rural space represented by Northam and the urban space represented by London and Paris divided the boundaries of power.Whether in the town or in the city,Clara was marginalized.When Clara realized the differential representation of urban and rural space,she began to revolt and try to construct her own free space.However,Clara’s rebellious behavior is essentially the obedience and attachment to space power,which not only fails to make her realize herself,but also leads her to the path of anti-growth.Through depicting Clara’s experience of pursuing freedom,the novel reveals the characteristics of spatial power in British rural and urban space in the 1960s.By Revealing the illusory nature of the Golden Jerusalem,the novel shows us the fact that it is impossible for people to realize themselves by their transgression and rebellion based on power.
