摘要
《白老虎》是第三代印度裔英语作家阿拉文德·阿迪加的首部长篇小说,也是2008年布克奖获奖作品。在小说中,阿迪加通过主人公巴尔拉姆之口提出了“光明”与“黑暗”两个印度。两个印度贯穿于整个小说的情节叙事之中,在现实的镜像与表征中不仅呈现了巴尔拉姆不择手段从庶民阶层崛起的过程,揭示了印度经济高速发展神话背后残酷的社会现实,同时还展现了印度浮华背后底层庶民被遮蔽的历史,暴露了印度社会的多种痼疾。两个印度既揭露了当代印度社会发展中“丛林法则”残酷的硬暴力,又呈现了当代庶民社会场域中“鸡笼文化”强大的软暴力,体现出了重要的现实意义与社会价值。
The White Tiger is the first novel of the third generation of Indian English writer,Aravind Adiga,and also the winner of the Booker Prize in 2008.In the novel,Adiga puts forward two India of“light”and“darkness”through the mouth of the hero,Balram.The two Indias run through the plot narrative of the whole novel.In the mirror image and representation of reality,it not only show the process of Balram s rise from the lower subaltern by any means,reveal the cruel social reality behind the myth of rapid economic development in India,but also show the history of the lower subaltern being covered behind India s flashiness,exposing various chronic diseases of Indian society.The two Indias not only reveal the cruel hard violence of“the law of the jungle”in contemporary Indian social development,but also present the powerful soft violence of“the culture of the Rooster Coop”in contemporary subaltern social field,reflecting important practical significance and social value.
