Gender Narratives in Museum Field——A Case Study of the Museum of Migrant Workers in Guangzhou

The rise of migrant worker museums in modern cities reflects a personalized narrative centered on development and the market,which is consistent with the concept of economic rationality and the pursuit of individual economic growth.Established in 2012,the Museum of Migrant Workers in Guangzhou features an exhibition designed as a sequence of gender narratives,from the production of mobile labor in market transformation,to secular family life and the emotional expression of female workers.It representing the vibrant aesthetic image of female workers while shaping qualities of resilience and hard work.The gender narratives of museums begin with the employment practices of women in public labor and highlights the crucial role of“labor”in constructing female subject.Moreover,the narrative scripts about female workers demonstrates their educational value for tourists,asserting that women can achieve meaningful gender equality and self-assertion only through self-resilience and independent“labor”.Thus,the Museum of Migrant Workers in Guangzhou actively participates in the shaping of contemporary economic and social ideologies,functioning not only as a cultural carrier but also embodying economic implications and aesthetic values,forming a complex narrative system.
