摘要 discusses past and future developmentsin research on modern Chinese literature. The author believes that scholarshad been making such studies from Marxist perspectives and had producedwork of fairly high quality when, however, scholarship began to deteriorate inthe mid-1959s due to the increasing influence of the 'leftist' trend of thought.A turn for the better has taken place since the overthrow of the 'gang of four'and especially the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committeeof the Chinese Communist Party. This change conforms to the needs to recon-struct the field as well as to the laws of the advancement of the science; itmarks the maturation of the discipline. Nevertheless, new conditions andtasks have appeared and old shortcomings have not yet been overcome. Theauthor discusses some pressing questions in the current scholarship; he stressesthat study of the history of literature as well as analyses of writers and theirworks from Marxist perspectives and clarification of related basic theoreticalquestions are the key to the field’s development. discusses past and future developments in research on modern Chinese literature.
