International Students in China as Media:A Study of their Motivation to Tell China’s Stories through Social Media

社交媒体的技术可供性使得来华留学生可以突破时间、空间的局限,对自己在中国的生活做即时的、连续的、细节的、不受约束的呈现。讲述中国故事,作为一个来自国家层面的宏大叙事名词,在来华留学生这一特定群体使用社交媒体的过程中,呈现出没有把关人,不需要传声筒与扩音器.

The availability of social media technology enables international students in China to break through the limitations of time and space to present their life in China in an immediate,continuous,detailed and unconstrained manner.The use of social media by this specific group of international students in China to tell their China’s stories,a grand narrative term from the national level,presents a brandnew landscape of creating their own issues without gatekeepers,mouthpiece and megaphone,which even becomes an internalized part of the daily life of these international students.Through semi-structured interviews,this paper interviewed four international students in China who use social media extensively,and concluded that these international students as media,when using social media,are endowed with the dynamics of sharing from the perspective of communication economics and have certain ability of self-planning and publishing contents,hence realizing cross-cultural and“disembeding”communication.
