Membrane potential is essential for the uptake of substance and physiological activity in cells; and is an indicator of cell viability and a criterion of aquatic environment. It is also applied to classification of ecological populations. So membrane potential is a key parameter in studies on aquatic microplanklon. It can be estimated by microelectrode, radioisotope method, spectro photometry, flow cy-tometry, etc. , with flow cytometry being the best choice for the measurement of membrane potential, because of several advantages such as rapid data analysis, capacity of sorting and little disturbance to the organisms .
