In 1625, French Jesuit missionary Nicholas Trigault and Chinese Catholic Zhang Geng translated Kuangyi, the first selected Chinese version of Aesop's Fables. The translation of Kuangyi was influenced by Chinese fables, which were then in a period of full boom. Meanwhile, Western fables spread by Kuangyi aroused concern from Chinese literati, resulting in the emergence of the first group of Westernized Chinese fables.
